Barberton Makhonjwa Mountain on world’s heritage spotlight

The MEC for Finance, Economic Development and Tourism, Mr Sikhumbuzo Kholwane will on Thursday, 28 June 2018 attend the 42nd session of the World Heritage Committee in Manama, in the Kingdom of Bahrain.

The Committee is expected to deliberate on the listing of Barberton Makhonjwa Mountain as a World Heritage site amongst others.

MEC Kholwane is accompanied by a delegation comprising of representatives of Barberton Chamber of Business, Provincial Heritage Office, Mpumalanga Tourism and Parks Agency and the BMM WHS project team.

In the lead up to this historic gathering of scientists which started on the 24th of June 2018, MEC Kholwane held meetings with affected parties to solidify the country's mandate on the listing of Barberton Makhonjwa Mountain Geosites as the World Heritage Site.

The meetings followed the listing of Barberton Makhonjwa Mountains World Heritage Site (BMM WHS) project on United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation’s website as part of the final consultative process before a decision on the nomination is made.

MEC Kholwane has expressed his confidence in the bid and is looking forward to a positive outcome at the end of the session.
